What Are the New Style Rules According to Millennials

  • Written by Lilly Miller

Right now, millennials are the ruling generation with around 1.8 billion people (or around 23%) of the world’s population. And naturally, the biggest generation is dictating trends and encouraging the market to succumb to its will and desires. And businesses are more than ready to hear what millennials have to say!

Millennials love to break rules when it comes to everything, fashion included. Guys today want and need practical fashion that will serve them, not the way around. And even though millennials think that rules are made to be broken, there are a few style rules almost everyone sticks to. If you want to stay stylish and trendy, here are a few new style rules set by wise millennials.

Durable and diverse shoes are trendy

Millennials have a hard time earning their money, so when they spend it, they want quality and comfort, especially in their shoes. The fashion world has been drawing inspiration from the 90s for a while now, and what better brand to mention here than Birkenstock. Millennials love everything about these shoes—they are comfy, unique, and durable. Plus, you can pair them with jeans, chinos, shorts, and anything in between. Millennials also love faithful work boots for the winter and simple white sneakers for that athleisure look we’re going to talk about. All of these shoes are very diverse and can cover almost all situations in a millennial’s life.

Indy brands deserve support

One trend that’s sort of popping out in the world of millennial fashion is called “label-less fashion”. It’s not that millennials don’t want to spend money on brands, they just don’t want flashy logos and branding. Even lux brands that sport a more minimalist approach to branding are doing great with millennials. On the other hand, this generation is proud to support smaller brands that will give them a more unique look and greater quality. The price point might be the same with big-VS-indy brands, but the latter usually deliver a much cleaner and one-of-a-kind look.

Accessories make the outfit

For millennials, clothing is the base layer of the look, while accessories provide it with those final touches that make the outfit truly work. Many times, all you need to elevate your outfit is to add a nice watch to the mix or layer some trendy chains. To show off your style and elegance, even more, choose a tactical minimalist wallet that will attract the attention of everyone who sees it. When paying for a dinner date or providing your contact information to your business clients, a tactical wallet will show off your attention to detail and dedication to your look. A minimalist wallet and an elegant money clip are unique accessories that can do wonders for your look, and millennials know that very well!

Ditch gender norms

You can identify however you want today and millennials are here to respect your gender identity and accept your pronouns, sexuality, or lack of them both. Growing up with acceptance and love towards their fellow humans, millennials are slowly ditching the terms “men’s fashion” and “women’s fashion”. Being secure in their sexuality and gender expression, millennials choose to wear whatever looks good on them and makes them feel happy and comfortable.

And don’t think that brands are not seeing this shift and trying to use it to their advantage. Calvin Klein now has a gender-neutral fragrance called ck2 out, and Zara is proudly showing their first unisex “Engendered” collection. Even ultra-gendered and masculine brands like AXE are releasing campaign ads with men in heels and drag. Millennials are saying that you can be uber-masculine if you want, but you certainly can show your softer side if it makes you happy.

Dress up because you want to

Generations before us were mostly forced to adhere to strict dress codes for work and events. Our dads had to wear a suit for work and our grandpas certainly had to do it also. Millennials typically don’t have to sport a suit thanks to all the casual tech companies and remote work hours. This means that if you choose to wear a suit, you can let your uniqueness show and let your personality shine through the garment. Dark gray suits are a thing of the past, a millennials love something bolder and brighter. Unique shirts and ties mixed with more neutral suits are where it's at.

Embrace athleisure

Athleisure is the best thing that has happened to men lately, so make sure to embrace it. If you have the opportunity to mix formal and sporty clothing, take as many wardrobe tips on athleisure as you can. For instance, pairing a blazer and chinos with new high-top sneakers will give you a very edgy look. Or you can go very formal in your attire just to sport a crisp white t-shirt under your jacket. Athleisure is the most significant trend of the generation that will mark this day and age, so make sure to be present.
