Business

Having a home business can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. Having a home-based business is not for everyone. It requires a lot of discipline, planning and trials and errors. It also requires a space where you can work freely without worrying about being interrupted by family members or being distracted by the entertainment aspect of being at home. Below are some important key factors that one must consider when starting a home business.

Create your niche

It is important that you decide what your passion is and what you can easily stick to. Coming up with an idea for your business is crucial to your success. It is easy to get bored working from home, because you don’t have the social network that comes with working in an office with fellow colleagues. Decide what you like to do, regardless if its transcribing online, mail orders, teaching English on an online platform, or homemade beauty products such as soap or perfume. It is important that you invest your money, time and effort into something you enjoy doing.

Be resilient

Keep in mind that you may not see the benefits of your home-based business right away. It will take time to build up a profit and earn money from your home-based business. Do not get discouraged if you do not earn in a month what you used to make working for a company. Also, do not listen to friends or associates trying to discourage you. It is advisable to read articles about individuals who were able to successfully start their home business. Maybe you find out that some of the same frustrations you are facing they faced and can give you advice on how to overcome these challenges.

Stay Goals and Stay Focused

Create target goals for your home-based business. Have a SMART (sustainable, measurable, achievable, relative and timed) objective time table on how you would like to see the growth of your business. Decide how much money you plan to invest and make sure that it is a reasonable amount that will not interfere with your living expenses. I would advise that you create a separate bank account separate from your home business that will allow you to keep track of your expenses.

Find a proper Shipping company

It is important that if your business involves shipping that you find a shipping company that will not eat into your profit margin. For packing supplies and basic shipping needs, the USPS is a good idea. I just went over to the Sunset post office, tell them what I need to have done, and they help me through the process. I have tried to ship products internationally and it had an effect on what I made at the end of the month. It may be a good idea to create a shipping account with an international courier because sometimes they offer discounts for registered customers. DHL and FedEx usually have good deals for customers who register with them.

Research the competition

If you are marketing a product, it is always good to research the competitors prior to making an investment. Sometimes cheap online stores have brought down the market value of products, reducing the competitive pricing.

Use inexpensive or free marketing techniques

Social media is your BEST friend for marketing your products. Create a Facebook page for your business. Facebook also has inexpensive payment options to allow you to create a target audience to reach more customers. It is also advisable to create a blog where people can post customer satisfaction comments about your business or service.

In essence, having a home business can be challenging but rewarding. It is an excellent way for supplemental income or for working towards financial freedom. I would strongly advise if you currently have a job and want to start a home business - then try to start it while employed. This way you reduce the stress factor of waiting to see the growth of the profit of your business, while you are still employed. Good luck and have fun starting your home business!
