Over the past few months, employees have to stay home due to the pandemic. The office isn't a healthy place for everyone considering the close interaction among the employees. Some companies couldn't survive this setup and decided to close. As a result, millions of people around the world lost their job. Even big businesses filed for bankruptcy as a result of the closure orders. There's a good number of employees who aren't working in a regular work set up right now. There also seems to be no end in sight. Therefore, it begs the question, will employees ever feel motivated to get back to work again?

It’s a challenge

Although working from home is the new normal, it’s not a sustainable way to work for many industries. For instance, those who work in the tourism industry couldn’t work from home. The jobs rely mainly on providing services to tourists. Face-to-face interaction is necessary. Those who lost their jobs in this industry might not have the desire to come back to work again. They will look for a different job where there's more stability.

People might rely on government support

Some right-wing politicians argue that it's not an excellent idea to always provide for the needs of the people at this time. Constantly receiving a check from the government could lead to permanent dependence. These people won't feel motivated to go back to work again since they're getting money from the government anyway. However, no study proves this theory. Some people still find dignity in work, and they don't want to rely on the government dole out to survive.

Businesses have to do better

Once the situation improves, more businesses can reopen. Employers have to do better to attract employees and make them desire to work again. It starts by providing more comprehensive insurance coverage to employees. This pandemic taught us that without quality insurance, many people would end up dying.

Employers also have to implement changes in the workplace. Perhaps, a shortened number of hours to go to the office each day would work. Longer weekends could also be an alternative.

Over the last months, businesses didn’t conduct any fun corporate event. Since the government band mass gatherings, hosting these corporate events would be a violation. They shouldn’t get wiped away under the new normal. Employees also want to have fun, and these events are crucial. You can host a funfair hire as a way to keep your employees motivated. They will have fine for a day and get back to work feeling more energized. You can also host team building activity so that the employees will feel inspired to work as a team under one office space again.

Preparing for the future

Losing the best employees isn't only what businesses have to worry. There's always a possibility of another pandemic coming soon. Businesses that closed taught us that we need to prepare for an uncertain future. Save money for the rainy days, and avoid overspending. Recovery might take a while, but we will get there.
