There is nothing worse than feeling stuck in a rut at work. Going day in and day out to the office to work in a job that you hate with people that you don't like for money that isn't worth it - it’s soul destroying. The grass looks greener in someone else's office, and the computer look better, too. So you’re left with you just sitting there, waiting for something good to happen to you.

You should consider what you are getting out of your current role, and then you can decide whether you want to angle sideways in the same industry but just to another company, or if you want a complete career do-over. Informed choice is far better than a knee-jerk reaction, so let’s check out the questions now.

  1. Why Change? What is it about the job that you are in right now that you want to change? You need to explore what you want to be different, otherwise you can be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire with the same dull role in another samey company. There are a lot of reasons that you may want to change careers. Perhaps you have been there for too long and you’ve reached your ceiling. Perhaps you want to learn something more. 2. Is It Really The Job? Does the feeling of stagnancy come from your job or does it come from other avenues in your life? Exploring this is so important, as you want to know that the change will make you happy. Some people change their job before realizing the problem they have is in their personal life, which makes things so much more complicated.
  3. What Do You Want to Do? When you choose your career in college, you probably didn't anticipate that a decade or two down the line you want something else. The thing is, you’re human. Your likes and dislikes are going to change, as are the things that make you want your job. It may have once been motivated by a brand name, but you may now have a family and be motivated by money. Things change - roll with it and explore your options.
  4. Do You Want A Clean Slate? Some job changes require an entire reshuffle in knowledge, which is why people go back to college or start an apprenticeship to gain new skills. If you want a clean slate, it may be worth re-exploring your study options!
