Van Doren Invitational

Huntington Beach, California, USA The 2014 Van Doren Invitational Women’s Skateboarding contest, an invite-only contest in the beautiful and gnarly California Rampworks-designed bowl on the beach, had 18 of the world’s best ladies bowlriders thrashing it out on July 28 and 29 as part of the Vans US Open. The field of skaters included luminaries such as Vanessa Torres and Karen Jonz and up and coming younger riders including Alana Smith, who took second place .

The ladies have always shredded fiercely, but they’re kicking it up even more-- the rest of the world is finally catching on. Lizzie Armanto, who won the inaugural Van Doren Invitational in 2013  killed it again, taking the top spot with style and skills. Moves including a feeble grind to fakie in the corner of the bowl’s deep end, a backside air, and lien to tailslide on the Vans wall catapulted her ahead of Smith and last year’s number two lady, Jonz, who rolled into spot number  three on the podium this time around.
