Every April towns across America celebrate national poetry month, and Wind River Country/Fremont County celebrated in true Cowboy fashion. For example, Riverton hosted a WyoPoets Spring Workshop April 22 and 23 with a presentation by poet Linda M. Hasselstrom. Shoshoni hosted its fourth annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Cowboy poets and fans of the craft gathered at the Fire Hall on April 21, 2016,for live music and poetry recitations like this one from Rodter Weitzel’s recently released book, “Ribbons of the Past:”

Thanks

When the days of summer have come to an end

As crops are all gathered and put in the bin

The tools all are put in their proper place

To wake in the morn to find only a trace

The horses are corralled or put in their stalls

Enjoying their rest from the long hauls

Those spring calves have grown so much

They are bigger and harder to touch

As the gardens are picked and canned in a jar

We praise our almighty with thanks of how Lucky we are.

Hub Whitt kicked off the evening with song and poetry, followed by Karl Brauneis, Rodger Weitzel and Jean Haugen, all of Lander. A break was planned with campfire songs by the Pushroot Ranger Band, but nobody left their seats until they stopped playing. The break was followed by more local cowboy poetry by Rick Pitt of Lander, a reading by John Bower of Shoshoni, and written and recited poetry by Garland Kennington of Riverton.

The Shoshoni Public Library, which hosted the event, received thank-you notes from attendees following the event declaring the gathering “most enjoyable,” “well done,” and cause for “looking forward to coming back.”
