Restoration and redevelopment for historic Herston hospital site

Queensland 1 August 2014. The Royal Children’s Hospital site at Herston is set to become a world class health precinct, with the Queensland Government now calling for registrations of interest for future development proposals.
Treasurer Tim Nicholls said hundreds of new jobs for Queenslanders would be created during the construction phase for the precinct, with the potential for thousands more once onsite businesses and industry were established.
“The Queensland Government is continuing to deliver better planning and infrastructure for the state, as part of our commitment to create jobs by growing a four pillar economy,” Mr Nicholls said.
“With the Royal Children’s Hospital soon to move into the new Lady Cilento Children’
“We’re calling for ideas to develop the land and buildings through an integrated, master-planned solution that encompasses healthcare delivery; with health-related facilities such as research, education and complementary commercial opportunities.
“Queenslanders in need will benefit from a world-class health precinct and local residents will benefit from a vibrant hub in their community.
“Further, several heritage-listed buildings on the site which have suffered greatly from the former Labor government’s years of utter disregard and neglect, will be restored to their former glory.”
The registration of interest process, run by Projects Queensland will ask industry to submit their preliminary ideas for the use of the site, with an expressions of interest process to follow.
- The Herston site is approximately 4.8 hectares and contains 23 buildings, including four key buildings that make up the Royal Children’s Hospital (Coles, Woolworths, Surgical and Foundation Buildings).
- The Herston site is located among Queensland’s largest and most important health delivery, research and clinical teaching institutions.
- The following heritage-listed buildings are on the proposed redevelopment site: Edith Cavell building, Lady Norman building and the Lady Lamington building (comprising the original Nurses’ Home and the North and South Towers).
