Health

There are few problems that are as annoying as having to go to the toilet all the time. You waste time and energy getting up and down all the time, and it makes you worry about leaving home when you might not have access to a bathroom. If it's an ongoing problem, it's not something that you want to ignore. There could be an underlying issue that's causing you to need to pee more often than usual, and getting the right diagnosis and treatment is important for your health. Have a look at some of the issues that could be causing this problem.

UTI

A urinary tract infection is one common cause of frequent urination, especially for women. UTIs occur when bacteria get into your urethra, bladder or kidneys. Most UTIs are in the bladder, making your bladder irritated and making you feel like you need to pee all the time. Of course, when you go to the bathroom, it often turns out that you don't really need to go. A UTI can be addressed with cystitis treatment or appropriate treatment for other types of UTI. Antibiotics are a common treatment for a UTI, and other treatment options might be available too.

Diabetes

A more serious cause of frequent peeing could be diabetes. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes cause more frequent urination. It happens because sugar builds up in the blood, which makes the kidneys work harder to filter and absorb it. The extra sugar that your kidneys can't deal with end up in your urine, making you need to go more often. If you think that you might have diabetes, you will need to see a doctor. They can test your blood sugar levels and carry out other tests to find out whether diabetes could be the issue or if it's something else.

Pregnancy

Women can also find that the reason they're peeing more often is pregnancy. In the first trimester, your blood volume increases, requiring your kidneys to work harder. The excess fluid ends up in your bladder, so you need to urinate more. This can continue in the second trimester too, and there's another reason you might need to go more in the third trimester. As the baby grows and the due date arrives, it moves down into your pelvis, which puts pressure on your bladder. You might also experience a bit of leakage from laughing, sneezing or coughing.

Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder is another reason that you might find yourself going to the toilet more often. This can make you feel like you suddenly need to go at any time. An overactive bladder occurs when the muscles in your bladder contract involuntarily, instead of only doing so when your bladder starts to get full. Lots of things can cause an overactive bladder, from a stroke to drinking too much caffeine. Seeing a doctor to determine the cause will help with finding the right treatment.

If you're peeing too much, make an appointment with a doctor. Finding out what the problem is will help you find the best treatment.
